November 08

12 - Ernst & Young breakfast workshop for Independent Directors & Audit Committee Chairmen: How good is your internal audit function - and how much better could it be?
The changing role of the independent director continues to be high on the business agenda. The unprecedented volume of change, its pace and complexity, is particularly challenging for independent directors in today’s business climate. Our tailored programme of breakfast workshops offers technical training and guidance across a range of management and governance issues. The workshops are distinguished by giving a small number of participants the opportunity to discuss and challenge these topics in a roundtable setting with an Ernst & Young expert leading the discussion.  Participants particularly appreciate the informal and practical approach that we take. Contact ldavey@uk.ey.com for more information.

the directors’ report and the Takeover Directive?
• Is there any merit in considering early implementation of
accounting standards such as IFRS 8 ‘Operating Segments’
and IFRS 3 (revised 2008) ‘Business Combinations’?
• What key accounting developments need to be considered?
• What Companies Act 2006 implementation issues arise?
• How do you assess the overall quality of your report?

December 08

December 3 - KPMG Insight Tax Seminar – London

The topic of the seminar will be 'Top Tax Issues' and will focus on:

  • Maximising your VAT reclaims under the Fleming and Conde Nast cases - Companies have until 31st March 2009 to reclaim VAT for periods prior to 1997. Over 35 different types of claims have now been made, often in cases where limited records are available and extrapolation techniques are now being agreed with HMRC.
  • Responding to a stakeholders question of "Should we migrate" - Following several highly publicised cases, many directors and investors are asking companies what their position is. We will help you to understand the issues involved (including an update on the Taxation of Foreign Profits condoc) and consider how you should respond.

We will also provide an update of the pre-budget report if (as appears likely) it has been held by 3 December. Contact Audrey Greenwood for further information.
